How to Use Wax Melts & a Pottery Warmer

A wax melt is scented wax you warm in a pottery warmer so its fragrance rises gently. Place a tealight or a little oil beneath the pot, let the warmth carry the scent, and swap the melt when it stops throwing. This guide covers warmers, tealights, oils, safety, reuse, and when to replace your melt.

Quick answer

  • What do I put in the warmer? — A wax melt in the top dish, and a tealight (or oil) underneath to warm it.
  • Tealight or oil? — Tealights give a steady, hands-off warmth; fragrance oils are clean and easy to top up.
  • How long does a melt last? — Until the scent fades — often several uses from one melt, depending on the warmth.
  • Can I reuse a melt? — Yes. Let it cool, and re-warm it until the scent finally fades.
  • When do I replace it? — When it stops throwing scent even after a fresh warm-up.

What is a wax melt and a pottery warmer?

A wax melt is a small piece of scented wax. A pottery warmer — our فواحة فخار — is a handcrafted ceramic pot with a dish on top and a space below for a tealight or fragrance oil. The warmth from below melts the wax gently, and the fragrance rises into the room.

Because the melt never touches a flame, the scent is soft and even rather than smoky. It is the flame-free way to fill a room, and the reason pottery warmers are one of our most-loved diffusers. Our melts and oils use premium French and Japanese fragrance oils at a 10% fragrance load, in the same 39 scents as the rest of the range.

Tealights, oils or wax melts — which do I use?

All three work with the same pottery warmer. Choose by the mood and the effort you want.

  • Wax melt — How it works: Sits in the top dish and melts over warmth. — Best for: A rich, gradual scent and a lovely ritual. — Good to know: One melt can be re-warmed several times.
  • Tealight — How it works: Burns beneath the pot and warms the dish. — Best for: Hands-off, steady warmth while you relax. — Good to know: Comes in 2-hour and 5-hour packs, 6 or 50 pieces.
  • Fragrance oil — How it works: A few drops in the dish release scent as it warms. — Best for: A clean, easy top-up between melts. — Good to know: Available in 30 ml and 100 ml.

Many homes use a tealight for the warmth and a melt for the scent — the two work together.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Set the pottery warmer on a flat, heat-safe surface, away from anything that can catch.
  2. Place a wax melt in the top dish. If you prefer oil, add a few drops instead.
  3. Light a tealight and place it in the space below the dish.
  4. Let the warmth build slowly — the scent will rise as the wax softens.
  5. When you are finished, put the tealight out and let everything cool completely.
  6. Once cool, the wax firms up again; lift it out or re-warm it next time.

Never add water to the dish, and never overfill it. A little melt goes a long way.

Safety

  • Put the warmer on a heat-safe surface, never on fabric, paper, or near curtains.
  • Keep it away from children, pets, and anything flammable.
  • Never leave a lit tealight unattended, and put it out before you leave the room.
  • Let the pot and the wax cool fully before you touch or move them.
  • Keep the warmer out of drafts, where a flame can flicker or catch.

A pottery warmer is safe when used with care — the same care you would give any candle.

Reusing wax melts and when to replace them

A wax melt is not single-use. Let it cool after each session; it firms up, and you can warm it again. Re-warm the same melt until the scent stops rising, then replace it with a fresh one. If the wax looks dirty or has collected dust, swap it out.

When a melt finally stops throwing scent, that is your cue — not the clock. Scent, not time, tells you when it is done.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Adding water. Water does not help a wax melt; it only makes a mess.
  • Overfilling the dish. A small melt gives plenty of scent.
  • Using a big flame. A standard tealight is enough; a large flame just wastes wax.
  • Leaving it unattended. Always put the tealight out when you leave.
  • Touching hot wax. Let it cool before you handle it.
  • Judging by time. Replace the melt when the scent fades, not after a set number of hours.

FAQ

How do you use a wax melt without a flame?

You warm it rather than light it. A tealight sits below the pot and warms the dish, so the wax melts gently and the scent rises. The melt itself never touches a flame.

How long does one wax melt last?

Until the scent fades, which is often several warm-ups from one melt. Replace it when it stops throwing scent, not after a fixed number of hours.

Can I reuse a wax melt?

Yes. Let it cool so it firms up, then re-warm it. Reuse the same melt until the scent is gone, then swap in a fresh one.

Do I need tealights or fragrance oil?

Either works. Tealights give steady, hands-off warmth; fragrance oil is a clean, easy top-up. Many homes use a tealight for warmth and a melt for scent together.

Is a pottery warmer safe indoors?

Yes, with care: heat-safe surface, away from children, pets, and anything flammable, and never left unattended while lit.
